New research reported by RTÉ has found that just 90 minutes to two hours of strength training per week may significantly reduce the risk of premature death. The study, which followed more than 147,000 adults over a 30-year period, found that regular resistance training was associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease and neurological conditions.

Researchers identified 90–120 minutes of weekly strength training as the “sweet spot” for health benefits, with the greatest improvements seen when resistance training was combined with regular aerobic exercise.

These findings reinforce the important role that gyms, leisure centres, fitness professionals and community facilities play in supporting healthier and more active communities.
