Ireland Active as the national association representing the health and fitness sector, has always been passionate about promoting physical activity and well-being across all age groups. Today, we are excited to share a proposal that has the potential to significantly enhance public health and fitness in Ireland: the introduction of Personal Tax Relief for gym and swimming pool memberships.
The Proposal: We are calling for the government to allow Personal Tax Relief for gym and swimming pool memberships through the existing medical expense rebate structure administered by Revenue (Med1 Form). This targeted measure aims to incentivise more people to engage in regular physical exercise, thereby improving public health outcomes.
Why This Matters: The many benefits of regular physical activity is universally agreed and research studies all show that Exercise helps prevent chronic diseases, boosts mental health, and improves overall quality of life. Despite these benefits, many individuals are deterred by the cost of gym and swimming pool memberships. Introducing a tax relief could make these facilities more accessible, encouraging more people to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Supporting Data: To understand the potential impact of this measure, we commissioned a nationwide REDC survey. The results are compelling:
- Nearly 3 in 10 (28%) of adults surveyed indicated they would likely take up gym or swimming pool memberships if tax relief were available.
- This translates to approximately 851,000 adults across Ireland who currently don’t exercise in gyms/swimming pools could benefit from this initiative.
In addition to the national figures, we have also compiled data on the potential uptake in each county, demonstrating the widespread applicability and benefit of this measure.
Alignment with Government Plans: This proposal aligns perfectly with the Government’s Healthy Ireland Implementation Plan 2023-2027 and the National Physical Activity Plan. By supporting this initiative, we can contribute to the government’s broader health and wellness objectives, fostering a healthier and more active population.
Call to Action: Our aim is to have this proposal included in the forthcoming budget in early October. To achieve this, we need your support. We encourage you to contact the elected TDs and Senators in your area to advocate for the introduction of Personal Tax Relief for gym and swimming pool memberships.
Benefits:
- Health and Societal Benefits:
- Encourages regular physical activity, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and enhancing mental health.
- Supports the well-being of individuals across all age groups.
- Economic and Social Impact:
- Increases membership in gyms and swimming pools, boosting local economies.
- Promotes a healthier population, potentially reducing long-term healthcare costs.
Conclusion: This is a significant opportunity to enhance health and fitness across Ireland. By introducing Personal Tax Relief for gym and swimming pool memberships, we can make a meaningful impact on public health and well-being. Let’s work together to support this initiative and make Ireland a healthier place for everyone.
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can drive positive change in our communities.
