Michael McKillop, a four-time Paralympic champion, has dedicated his life to breaking barriers and proving that fitness is for everyone. As the 2024 Ambassador for National Fitness Day, Michael shares his inspiring journey and insights on the importance of fitness and accessibility in our communities.

What impact did fitness have on your lifestyle?

“Fitness for me is everything. Being active from an early age allowed my body to develop into its best possible form, even with my disability. Having a disability from birth, fitness allowed me to progress at my own pace. Physical activity helped me to improve my fine motor skills, balance, coordination, and much more. Without fitness in my life, I would never have become a Paralympic Champion.

For Michael, fitness is not just about physical strength but also about resilience and determination. His story is a testament to the power of staying active, regardless of the challenges one may face.

Why is it important for facilities to develop an accessible environment to increase physical activity for a wider range of people?

“Having accessible facilities for all allows everyone to stay active regardless of their age or disability. These facilities will help improve people’s quality of life, help people gain a more independent life, and even help people gain more confidence through social interaction. That is not to mention the health benefits of staying active physically and mentally.”

Michael emphasizes that accessibility in fitness facilities is crucial for creating an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the benefits of physical activity. It’s about giving people the opportunity to live fuller, healthier lives.

What does it mean to be an ambassador for this year’s National Fitness Day?

“Being the 2024 Ambassador for Ireland Active National Fitness Day is a real privilege. Just like my whole sporting career, getting to represent the people of Ireland around the world is an honour. This journey was made possible by staying active my whole life. So, I truly hope being a part of this National Fitness Day will encourage others to know that being active and staying fit is an important choice to make that could change their lives forever.”

As the ambassador, Michael hopes to inspire others to embrace fitness as a lifelong commitment, highlighting the transformative power of physical activity in overcoming personal challenges.

Michael McKillop’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of accessibility in fitness and the incredible impact that staying active can have on our lives. As we approach National Fitness Day 2024, let’s join Michael in championing a future where everyone has the opportunity to get more active, more often.
