Although the Tax Credit Relief for Gym and Swimming Pool Memberships was not included in the 2025 Budget, Ireland Active welcomes Minister Jack Chambers’ broader budget announcement and his strong support for the fitness sector. Minister Chambers emphasized the importance of physical activity for the health and well-being of all citizens, stating:
“I strongly believe that physical activity is essential to supporting the health and mental well-being of all our citizens, young and old. I believe there is merit in examining how the tax system can help achieve greater participation in sport and fitness activities, including through gyms. Over the course of the next year, my officials will continue this work with a view to developing proposals for consideration in advance of next year’s budget.”
Our CEO, Karl Dunne, shared his optimism for the future: “We look forward to engaging further with the Minister to roadmap how best to introduce a personal tax credit for exercise and swimming.” Dunne also expressed relief that, following consultation with Ireland Active, there will be no increase in the 9% VAT rate for gyms and swimming pools—an important outcome for the sector.
Although we are disappointed that this year’s budget did not include our proposed tax relief, our commitment to making fitness more accessible and affordable remains unwavering. We will continue to advocate for this tax credit and work with the government to ensure it is considered in future budgets.
Thank you for your support as we work towards getting more people, more active, more often.
