Ireland Active CEO Karl Dunne has highlighted the importance of recognised qualifications and professional standards for fitness professionals in a recent feature published by the Irish Independent.

The article explored the pathway to becoming a personal trainer in Ireland, the value of practical experience and the role that ongoing education plays in building a successful and sustainable career within the sector.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Karl Dunne emphasised that aspiring fitness professionals should complete recognised fitness instructor and personal trainer qualifications before registering with REPs Ireland, the national register for exercise professionals.

“This route typically involves completing recognised fitness instructor and personal trainer qualifications, followed by registration with REPs Ireland, the national register, which helps ensure that trainers meet recognised industry standards.”

He also highlighted the importance of quality education and practical coaching experience.

“One important point for aspiring trainers is that not all qualifications are equal. Online learning can be an effective way to deliver theory, but personal training ultimately is a people-focused profession, and that requires practical coaching skills, communication skills, and the ability to work safely with clients in real-world settings.”

Ireland Active and REPs Ireland are also currently working with an academic partner to develop an apprenticeship pathway aimed at producing highly skilled fitness professionals for the future.

As demand for exercise and wellbeing services continues to grow, qualified exercise professionals continue to play a vital role in supporting healthier and more active communities across Ireland.

Ireland Active and REPs Ireland remain committed to supporting the development of highly skilled fitness professionals through education, standards, and ongoing professional development.
