Summary
The Active Ageing programme aims to keep older adults, including older adults with disabilities active during the winter months and to keep a connection with their local community leisure centre/gym.
The initiative is for adults aged 55+ including older adults with disabilities who may be isolated due to reducing their social contacts due to COVID-19.
The initiative will target the one of the most marginalised and impacted group during the pandemic, older adults, and older adults with disabilities many of whom have been isolated in their homes and not taking part in physical activity.
A number of Ireland Active member facilities have signed up to take part in this programme to help support the physical activity needs of older adults in their local communities
Objectives
The programme aims to provide a safe environment with dedicated hours for older adults to exercise in facilities, while also providing an outlet for socialising with others and maintaining a link to their local community, leisure centre / gym. Instructor training included. Participating facilities are running a 10 week exercise programme culminating in a ‘Active Age Hour’ with promotional efforts to support this.
